I don't know about "out there," but I learned my lesson several years
ago. I was on the East Coast and my elderly mother, who was ill, was on
the West. I told my boss I was going to be leaving because of my
mother's ill health (she owned her home, I was renting -- it made more
sense that way). Big mistake!
Ultimately, she had surgery, recovered nicely and I didn't need to
move. However, (pause for effect) that was the end of my career
aspirations with that organization. I was black-listed, generally
harrassed and made miserable, and my career never recovered.
Several years later, working for a different manager who was trying
mightily to get me a promotion, the word was that I didn't deserve a
promotion, because I hadn't yet proven I was a loyal employee!!!
Unless your boss is your best friend and you'd lose more by keeping job
hunting a secret, I'd say wait until you KNOW you've got a knew job.
Honor the requisite notice period, assuming they don't tell you to get
out then and there (which happens all to often in the places I've seen).
My contribution to ether pollution,
BJ
