As a former Program Manager of an IT Specialist's course, my students were
required to work for 3 months unpaid. These work terms occurred for one
month at a time, at the end of each semester.

As a result of these work terms, many of my students got experience (and job
offers) from the companies they worked for. Their end-of-semester grades
were (in a large part) made up of the review their employers gave them.

I also worked a free three month internship on Capitol Hill during college
about three years ago. I didn't like it (the no money part), but it was
required and I would do it all over again if asked to. This never set a
precedent of working for free. In the past 3 years, I have turned my salary
into quite a high range. I knew that I would only be working for free for
short time and that it would not turn into anything bigger.

So, if you are willing to do it - more power to you. At least you are almost
guaranteed the experience you desire. Good luck!
