How very true. My Group... "The Employee Development and Support
Group" (Formerly, the Training Department) has just become a Self-Directed
Work Team. We have no boss, and everything that affects us, from Training
and Document Preparation, on down to dealing with poor performance within
our group, bad behavior and even the issue of raises and time off, is
decided by us. This experience has changed my opinion of certain types of
people.

Being self-directed is scary, and it took a huge leap of faith from
management that we would not become lazy. Most corporations I know of would
not turn control over so easily. We are the only group that is going
through this change, and the hope is we learn enough to take the idea to
other groups.

I was once a member of a "Non-Directed Slacker Team", but that never
worked out.

We now do it all, and we have to interact with a far more diverse
group of people. In short, we now work with engineers, programmers,
managers, supervisors, safety and
quality people, as well as HR and other groups as far away as Singapore and
Ireland.

Many have this special attitude that they are better and we are
beneath them in the scope of our knowledge and wisdom. I have stopped
reminding some of them that if it was not for us, they would not have what
they need to succeed. It is amazing how many of them say writers are not
needed, but ask us to polish up their presentation. Publicly... we are
hung. Privately, they know we have value, though they will never say so.

So, grin and bear it, folks. People will believe what they want about
writers and document peoples. I know I am as qualified for my job as
anyone, and that's good enough for me.
