How long to keep work samples?

I've been in the business for 12 years, both freelance
and as a direct employee. I've saved major manuals and
other projects I've worked on during this time. My
already large storage area is full. I realize I don't
have to keep EVERYthing. How far back should I start
getting rid of things? On the one hand, a 10-year-old
manual DOES seems out of date, but on the other hand,
it may be the only piece I have for a particular
industry or type of document.

I'd love to hear how you've successfully "thinned"
your samples.
