A contract defence author once told me how that the 'This page
intentionally left blank' message was used to maintain pagination in
various drafts until information was available. On one occasion, the
information was deemed as no longer needed; to tie in with the list
of effective pages, the issued page carried the legend:

'This page, which has never existed, is hereby cancelled.'
