Here's another wrinkle to examine. You can add
page numbers two different ways.
You can put the page number (field) in the text of
the footer OR you can float the page number
(field) pretty much anywhere on the page inside
its own text box.
You put the page number in a footer by opening the
footer (View > Header and Footer) and inserting it
(Insert Page Number on the Header and Footer
toolbar) into the actual text of the footer.
You put the page number in a text box by choosing
Insert > Page Numbers and working the Page Numbers
dialog box.
It sounds like your odd pages have the page number
in a text box that you have successfully dragged
outside the footer box. However, your even pages
have the page number in the footer paragraph, so
you can't drag them to a position outside the
footer.
My advice: Always put the page number inside the
footer paragraph. It's much easier to work with
that way. Accept the physical boundaries this puts
on page number placement, because they are just
and right and noble. It's what footers are for.
Your readers will love you for it. They'll
probably send you tips and ask for autographed
copies of your work.
If you insist on putting the page numbers all over
the place, then simply repeat the Insert > Page
Numbers command. This should clear the old page
numbers from all locations, and give you new text
boxes that start aligned with the footer, but can
be repositioned.
Alternately, you can insert page numbers in the
footer text, then change the left and right
margins and tab settings of the footer paragraph
so it extends beyond the footer box boundaries.
That's a LOT more than I intended to say about
page numbers. Too much time between projects, I
guess.
