I have been called an instructional technologist, an associate writer, a
senior product information specialist, a technical writer, and now,
documentation specialist.

I would say the old cliche, that I don't care as long as they spell my name
right on the paycheck, but it does get confusing. Especially when you are
trying to explain to a prospective client what you do, why they need you,
and that, "no, my hourly isn't really that excessive when you
consider......" :)

My daughter said that at college, she would tell someone I was a technical
writer and they would look at her blankly. Then she would say "she takes
what programmers do and puts it in English for the rest of us." Then
everyone understood perfectly. And if you knew how antiquated the student
email is at that college, and how hard it is to use, you could understand
how well they can related to that comment.
