Its not a fluke. I've done the same thing for some time now. I never took
the time to look closely at the documentation to determine if this procedure
is discussed. However, it would not be unlike MS to include it as an
undocumented feature.

I may have another solution to the autonumbering problem. I've found that
when I hit a return after a numbered list (step) and it assigns a funky
number to my new graf and to the preceding, when I Undo by pressing Ctrl-Z,
the preceding number goes back to what it was and allows me to just type
the
next number for the new graf. I've done this several times (using RHELP 7
on
top of Word 97), compiled, come back in and checked, and all looked normal.
Has anyone else done this? Is it just a fluke, or did I stumble onto
something that works for all?

Based on my own preliminary experimentation, it appears that the worst
autonumbering problems of Word 97 live on in Word 2000. I plan to continue
using SEQ fields instead of autonumbering. (A tip about this is available
on
our Web site at http://www.knopf.com/tips.htm.)

Perhaps autonumbering will truly work well in Word 2010. ;)
