detract from end-user productivity and an application's overall success.
Here are presented strategies and methods for encoding meaning in icons,

Synopsis
With an exhaustive supply of useful examples, this practical guidebook
offers readers clear, complete, research-based guidelines for designing,
testing, refining, and implementing icons for true user-friendly
communication. Features a comprehensive icon glossary. --This text refers to
the paperback edition of this title

User-interface icons are much more than on-screen decorations. Icons play an
integral role in enhancing end-user productivity and an application's
overall success. Written by a seasoned design professional, The Icon Book
presents clear, step-by-step guidelines for designing instantly
recognizable, fully understandable, and reliably memorable computer icons
and icon sets for domestic and international use. You'll find heavily
illustrated, research-based accounts on every aspect of the icon design
process - from initial planning to refining and testing techniques - plus
real-world insights for avoiding problems that can occur in translation to
international markets. The Icon Book presents strategies and methods for
encoding meaning in icons, developing iconic languages and a consistent
design style, using color and other design tools, and achieving management
goals; offers suggestions for representing complex, "unpicturable" concepts
and indicates when not to use icons; and includes a comprehensive icon
glossary. It is a valuable resource for user-interface designers,
developers, computer-based trainers, graphic and multimedia designers, and
technical writers. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable
edition of this title.

The publisher, John Wiley & Sons
Uses a practical, research-based approach to the design of icons. Icons are
used widely but not always used wisely. This book will prescribe an orderly
process for designing sets of icons, suggest ideas for ``unpicturable''
concepts, explain how to refine and test icon ideas, demonstrate how to
design large sets of related icons, guide the development of icons for the
international market. There is an icon glossary which features over 1,500
icons. The book/disk version features the icon glossary in both PC (Windows)
and Mac files.

Great reference book - but the disk isn't included
This book is a great reference tool for people who have to design toolbar
icons. I wouldn't try to design an icon without it.

One note for people who may have seen the book before - only the book is
available from Amazon - not the diskette with the set of starter icons. This
leaves you with pictures of the starter icons in an appendix - which you can
try to duplicate by hand in your icon editor of choice. Great reference
book, too bad the disk isn't included. It's almost as valuable as the book
itself. --This text refers to the paperback edition of this title

Hello All,

A colleague of mine went to the STC conference in Cincinnati in May 1999 and
saw a book called Icons (it was very popular and sold out). Unfortunately
she did not write down any identifying information about the book and with
only the title to go on, I haven't been able to find it. Does anyone know
the author(s) and /or publishers of this book and where I may purchase it?
It apparently comes with a CD full of icons.

If you don't know anything about this book, perhaps you could refer me to
any book/CD containing icons that can be used in a commercial application.

Thank you for your time.
