I user ForeHelp/InterHelp to document a browser-based application. It's
not written in Java, but still encounters many of the same areas of
concern.

I am very pleased with InterHelp in general. There are a few Netscape
problems, but there are ways to get around almost all of them. Netscape
is generally more restrictive to write for than is IE - and the
programmers here would back me up on that - we estimate there's am
additional 5% overhead incurred in coding for Netscape. At some point,
we may question our browser support policy.

InterHelp does work to produce help systems that document browser-based
applications quite well. It launches in a separate browser instance, but
it doesn't look like the application at all. It's a lot like launching a
WinHelp instance over a Windows application - similar, but unlikely to
be confused. We've had no complaints form out users.

Hope this helps,

John

<snip>
For those of you who are producing
online help for Java-based applications, are you writing the help using
JavaHelp, or are you using HTML-based help instead (I would use
Interhelp). All my audience will have a Web browser installed (although
I can't control which browser, so the help must be browser independent).

The SME's objection to using HTML-based help is that opening up the help
file will require opening up another browser window which can be easily
confused with the application browser window which must not be closed.
Can anyone provide me with information about this?
