I just spoke to a webmaster colleague and he says this little campaign has
been going since 1995 and hasn't got anywhere. I think that pretty much
defines it as a non-issue.

I'm still using GIFs on HTML pages and I will continue to do so until PNG
becomes a true standard.

I'll worry about replacing GIFs with PNG when the majority of the browsers
in
use support PNG properly. That should be somewhere around 2005, given the
current rate of adoption. PNG has some really good fatures in it, but
they're
useless when only a small fraction of your audience can view them.

But, since the GIF patent expires around 2002, I guess it'll probably be a
non-issue.
