When describing something variable like this, I tend to give an example. You might use your original description, which sounds garbled because you are begin vague, and then follow it with the example in your addtl info posting.

The Common Name Search is used to retrieve entries in the PDF based on common name. Every entry that contains the common name as shown in the input textbox is retrieved. For example, if you search for "ga," the search will return entries including galena and realgar. Once this initial search is conducted and a set of entries is retrieved, you can use local operators, such as Not, Contains, Exactly, etc. to modify the search. The entries that
are retrieved in this secondary search are dependent on both the common name and the choice of the local operator. For example, in searching for "ga" in the secondary search and selecting X as the local operator, only Y will be returned by the search because Z no longer matches the criteria.
