This is another great question. More and more, clients are looking to
catalog all of their marketing and educational materials in one
customized database for "just in time" digital printing. In one agency
I worked for, we cataloged an entire pharmaceutical category
(cardiovasculars) of marketing, professional and patient education
materials. When the client had a need, they would submit an order and
we would turn the print job around in about 2 weeks! It used to take up
to 18 months!
Kodak had some stats out from their CEO talking about millions of
dollars saved per year etc. As a writer, I find it so much easier and
faster to snag a digital file, update it, proof and edit, then send it
off to print.
I'll look through my personal archives to see if anyone from other lists
responded with names of software packages. This list was pretty silent
on the issue when I asked.
