The usual way to label such things is to refer to the "level" of the
heading: so the main headings are "level 1" (abbreviated L1), the next level
in the hierarchy is "level 2" (L2), the next is "level 3" (L3), and so on. I
suspect (but can't confirm) that the practice of leveling comes from heading
structures such as 1.1.1.3: count the number of numbers <g> and you know the
level.
