Open the Character settings dialog box as you would to select any other
font, but type "MS Sans Serif" in the font name field instead of
selecting a font from the list.
As an alternative, you can define a style (say, called MSSans) that uses
the MS Sans Serif font, using the same technique of entering the name
instead of selecting it. The advantage to using a style is you won't have
to keep typing the name in the Character Settings dialog box.
No comment on the idiocy of the Word developers' decision to require this
workaround, which has been needed since Word for Windows first shipped.
