Well, Andrew must be busy, since he hasn't yet jumped in on this thread!
OK, if a newbie wants to open more doors to TW jobs, the first thing I'd
suggest is getting more technical skills, usually through formal course
work, but possibly through an online course or six. Here's why:
Writers who can offer a prospective employer demonstrated ability to learn
technical stuff (in addition to actually having some technical skills under
their hats) have a much better chance of getting a TECHNICAL writing job
than those who are "just writers." Writers who think that tech writing is
just a good way to put food on the table while they write "real literature"
will never do well at either.
A GOOD TW certificate program should offer both writing and technical
courses.
