You might be able to save yourself some work if you were able to use the
Standard Industry Codes (SICs) - or whatever they're now called - in your
classification system. I know there are unique codes for each industry, and
the system may be broken down to the company level. The advantage here,
besides not having to reinvent the wheel, is that trained researchers like
librarians can find stuff using those codes, thus minimizing the amount of
training you'd have to do.

For detailed info, check with a good business reference librarian in your
nearest large city.
