Thank you all for your help. I hadn't realized how out of my depth I was ...
but I do now!

It wasn't a particularly important exe - it was a bilingual dictionary. I wanted
to use it because I thought that with it being a gadget of a sort that the
developers would be more liable to use it and less likely to invent words.

As I wasn't prepared to spend much time on it I found it simpler to extract the
text, stick it in an HTML document and convert it to a table.

There, that should teach me to underestimate web solutions!
