C. Crowley is wondering, "Anyone on this list who is documenting
non-computer stuff (science, industrial equipment, whatever)--how'd you get
into that? What are the qualifications? How did you find your job?"

I went from a job in an analytical lab for a semiconductor manufacturer to
writing for a manufacturer of analytical equipment similar to what I had
been using.

I have a BA in journalism (and was a reporter for a while) and an
associate's degree in electron microscopy -- no BS degree. I got my
current job because I was familiar with the type of equipment. In
addition, my present company was looking to expand into the semiconductor
market, so my familiarity with the industry also helped.

I chose to pursue a tech writing job because I was feeling too specialized.
I found out about the job on the internet (an ad in the online version of
the local paper).

I think it would be interesting to hear from some listers who went from
software documentation to hardware documentation. Right now I get to do
both, which I like because of the change of pace.
