|I'm working at home full-time as a writer/editor because of a disability
|using Sun's work station on an ISDN line. Now that my company
|is facing hard times, My boss is concerned about
|the cost of ISDN and wants me to use my PC on a DSL line.
|I asked if they would pay me something for the use of my PC
|and the answer was no. I'm been a regular employee for 6 years.
|
|I know I'm lucky to have a job and be working at home but I'm
|wondering if I should push the request to be paid for use of
|my PC or just be happy to donate my PC for 8 hours a day?

A couple of things to note:

* Sun's work-at-home program is at the present time
totally voluntary for most employees.

* The policy clearly spells out that the employee is
responsible for security precautions and for home
office setup.

The rules are slightly different if the nature of the
employee's job is such that *Sun* is requesting that
the employee work at home. In that case, I believe
equipment and access are provided.

To answer the question about software, Sun is piloting
VPN tunnel software. Most people on the mobilework
alias that discusses this sort of thing are using a
combination of VPN and AT&T's free VNC software,
which provides X desktop emulation. (To head all of you
UNIX users off at the pass, the URL for VNC information is
