Thanks to all who replied with suggestions, both here and privately.
My solution in the end?
To save the FM book as HTML (using a new folder - as the conversion creates gifs for all the graphics (again)) and open the HTML file in MSWord and perfom the word count there.
Tried doing the same with RTF but to no avail - received a lot of formatting / coding pages before doc. was completely open and the page count had quadrupled before I abandoned it.
For those of you interested that was 198,883 words!
