Hi Steve. Very interesting. It appears that they want you there in a
consulting/guru role, rather than a "writer" (one who writes). This is a
very interesting proposal, for if I understand the situation correctly,
you'll be making sure the marketing department is documenting things
correctly. So, in essence, you'll be advising on style and form as well as
reviewing for technical accuracy? Very cool. Sounds like a
would-be-managerial position of sorts, or perhaps as a senior
editor/coordinator.

But, be careful that this situation does not render you redundant. If they
are doing the writing, you need to supply some sort of tangible proof of
your worth. Perhaps you'll be a filter between development and marketing,
taking specs and other info from developer interaction and making it "make
sense" so marketing can run with it. (Not that I doubt marketing's technical
aptitude, but this makes it easier for them to pound out documents, if
that's the arrangement, when they have verified factual information hashed
out and organized for them already.)

I suggest sitting down with your manager first and determine what the
company sees your role to actually be. Take notes on workflow and
responsibilities. Then, once that role is defined (for you and the company)
and you and the company feel comfortable with this arrangement, sit down
with your manager, the marketing manager and the development manager's) to
discuss this workflow and agree on deliverables, duties and roles.

I'd be interested to see where this goes. If not to the list, at least keep
me posted as to your progress (I'm asking out of genuine curiosity).

Good luck! :)
