Joyce,

I think that at your step you need a book that explains how to write for Online Help. This is something that firms like WexTech or RoboHelp forget to do: they give a list of "cool" features without telling why to use them.
I do not know the book cited by Jean, but from her description it seems to be good.
Notice that if you plan to write for both media Print and Online you will have to change your writing style to comply with both media, that means to write "single sourcing".
