There are also threads or topic that cannot be addressed without coming
across as being indifferent or hostile to the position of the poster to
which you are responding. This happened to me just two days ago in response
to what should have been a continuation of the thread, but it was a detour
into ardent territory where nothing would have been a better response than
anything.

I've gotten to the point where I throw away responses rather than send them.
Not flaming is tough as it is the receiver's perception of what was said
that matters not the sender's.

I once had a package person at a grocery store say something about a snack,
when all I was really doing was writing a check. What he didn't know was
that I worked at the store, and it would have been easy to get him fired for
what he said. I'm sure he didn't mean it the way I took it. And, I didn't
have the time to deal with him. But, the boss did laugh about it later that
week.

Then, there was the bookstore checkout person who looked at my stack of
$1400 worth of books and said "You're kidding. Right?" No. I told him I'd
talk to the manager if he didn't drop the attitude. When I tell this story
to other checkout people, they told me that I should have spoke to the
manager, because I would have gotten a BIG discount.
