If you plan to write for the IT industry, I recommend learning as much as you can about technical subjects such as programming, networking, and databases. Get a Computer Science degree, and supplement it with a few basic technical writing courses. Achieving a technical certification such as an MCSE or Oracle DBA before you graduate wouldn't hurt. If you don't "get technical" while you are still an undergraduate, you may find yourself trying to play catch-up for a good part of your career by studying technical subjects part-time while you work full-time.

I'd also like to know how long you've been in the
field and/or out of school. If you happen to teach
tech comm, let me know that.

I have been out of college and in the technical communication field for 5 years.
