PNG is also supported on-line. As a matter of fact, when a patent was claimed on GIFs a while back, many web sites, especially those in the free software or open source movements, converted their GIFs to PNGs. Since it also produces reasonably sized files, PNG format is also a very good choice if you're interested in single-sourcing or at least reusing material for different media.
