What would this be? A showcase of all the joys and
headaches one can expect from this profession? An
introduction to tools, fonts, and other synthetic
delusions of the electric head?

IMHO, intro classes are a complete waste of time and
money. If you want an intro to a profession, spend $30
on a book, not $300 or more (definitely more for the
real tech colleges... $3000+ in some cases) on a
class.

Focus on specific pieces of the trade, this way
students are focused on learning something somewhat
completely, and, those not interested in tech writing
as a profession (engineers, for example) can take a
specific course to help them in their soon-to-be
day-to-day tasks (writing specifications, public
speaking, presentations and electronic publishing,
etc.). Though electronic publishing may not be an
obvious choice for engineers, giving them the ability
to quickly product their required documentation -
whatever it may be - will help them be able to spend
less time getting the writing part of their job done
and more time on what they were ultimately hired to do
- be an engineer.
