Kent's take on the Cautions/Warnings/Notes debate - specifically that it
should apply only to hardware, is off the mark. There are ANSI standards
(sorry, I can't find it now, but it's in Kristin Woolever's book, _Writing
for the Computer Industry_ that's on my shelf at home) that describe the
appropriate use of these notifications, and the application is NOT limited
to hardware.

Case in point: I once worked for a manufacturer of process control systems.
It was imperative that software users know that certain actions in their
programs could destabilize the entire process. In other words, if you
screwed up your programming of the software, you might launch a catalytic
cracking tower, which is not nice.

We had a fairly extensive discussion of this subject about a year ago. I
saved some messages from January 2001 about it.

HTH,
Marguerite
