I had a first interview by telephone late last winter (weather was crap). Psychologically, I was prepared. I showered and dressed (in jeans and t-shirt, still-damp hair) and had my resume and notepad with a list of questions in front of me (with a coffee and a smoke). It was almost as nerve-wracking as a face-to-face interview, except I got to scratch where and when I wanted, and I could put my elbows on the table.

Had this interviewer been any more laid-back, I would have called a hearse. I tried to sound animated without sounding medicated, but I couldn't get him to change from a monotone, or get him off his agenda of questions.

<Just a thought: since the interviewer can't see you, active listening is a good technique; they can't hear you nod. And do not scratch too audibly.>

The phone interview did generate a second interview and a job offer, and the interviewer was quite personable, considering we both had to fight a blizzard to get to meet, and 2 jackasses from a TV station wouldn't share a cab with me (subway was stalled), and my hair got soaked. Hmm, two interviews with wet hair.

Sorry - just kidding. Couldn't resist.
