It's easy for someone who has never had to deal with depression to
characterize it as something less than a "real" disability. Having dealt
with chronic depression for 5+ years I know better. Dealing with a
condition that makes the most simple and routine tasks seem like a
herculean effort while enduring the scorn and ridicule of those too
ignorant or uncaring to recognize someone with a disability is hardly
wimpy. I've never heard someone tell a paraplegic to get his lazy butt out
of bed and quit feeling sorry for himself, nor have I ever seen mentally
retarded person being told to "snap out of it." I suppose compassion is
reserved for those with disabilities that can be seen.
