Use of animation comes down to the TW adage - know your audience. If
your site is technical and people are likely to go there for information
then keep it simple and easy for them to find what they want. It may be
that animation is perfectly appropriate but give the option to skip it.
If your site is personal or for entertainment then animation may well be
very appropriate with people being quite prepared to wait. Personally,
if a technical site is full of animation that slows everything down then
I won't go back unless the information can't be obtained anywhere else.

Company site for designers so it's perfectly appropriate. I also found
the Principle of Graphic Design section quite useful.
