For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Several members of TECHWR-L have mentioned the value
of Andrew's posts. Andrew often contributed with valid
points and useful information.
On the other hand, though, he often made inflammatory
statements. These inflammatory statements often
appeared to be made simply to generate traffic on the
list.
Yes, Mr. Plato sometimes provided useful information.
In my opinion, though, the useful information was
outweighed by Mr. Plato's sarcastic and ridiculing
tone. As a sarcastic person myself, I understand the
desire to be witty and sarcastic. Sarcasm and
inflammatory remarks, though, do not belong in a
professional discussion list.
Yes, a Delete key is always available. That option,
though, does not give license to be unprofessional and
discourteous.
It is unfortunate that Mr. Plato's advice and opinions
will no longer be available on TECHWR-L. It is more
unfortunate, though, that his advice and opinions were
not presented more professionally.
However, perhaps his "good-bye" message was just
another attempt at baiting people to start a
discussion. ;-)
