STORY: Goober and the Innovation Award

Goober was determined to win the Innovation Award at
that week's meeting. He
was a very competitive bugger, and it wouldn't be the
first time
he'd taken home the prize (after mugging the winner in
the parking lot after-hours). However, he was
uncomfortable because the
engineers had recently been walking away with the
honor a little too
often (and, as is often the case, they migrate to and
from the building in packs). It was time to bring it
back to his coffee table where it
belonged.

He sat at his computer and mulled over his choices.
He browsed through
the TECHWR-L archive, and after noting the recent
screenshot discussion,
ran to the bathroom and got sick. After cleaning
himself up and returning to his cube, inspiration hit.

"I know! Screen captures!!!" he exclaimed. He then
shrunk down in his chair as several people began
prairie-dogging for a look at the noise that broke the
stale monotony of the workday. Once the
rubber-necking co-workers returned to work, Goober
then began to waste the rest of the working day
preparing a speech about screen captures and how cool
they were.

At the meeting, Goober explained, "This tool allows me
to do some cool stuff."

He saw the engineers exchange glances. "So," said one
engineer, "using a tool's standard functionality is
innovative?"

Goober continued, "Ummm... ahem... uh... Whew! Boy
it's warm in here... um... paperless... integration...
enterprise solution..."

The engineer drew and evil smile and continued. "So,
like Acrobat, only not. Right? Can you explain why you
should get the award over the Flash-based web browser
we authored this morning? And... Woah! You're the
drunk from last week's party!!!"

Goober concluded, "So do I get the award or not?"

He wasn't sure what he enjoyed more - winning the
booby prize, or seeing tears (of laughter) in the
engineers' eyes.
