I try not to bid per project, unless the scope of the project is so clearly defined that an estimate is not going to be off by much. If the project is not far enough along, or spec'ed out well, I'll only bid per hour, although I will sometimes allow a cap on the number of hours. Some of my clients are small startups that may not be working from a mature business model, so the specs are slim, if they exist at all.

Sometimes I will sit with a client and explain what I need to build into a fixed bid to guarantee that all possibilities are covered. This lets the client can see firsthand why an hourly rate usually works out better.

* With the slowdown, have you been pressured for more fixed bids from
clients?

No. It's remained pretty constant.
