You might look into the American Medical Writers Association (www.amwa.org).
They have a training program, of sorts, for medical writers. If you
complete it, you get a "basic" certificate in whatever area you choose to
specialize in, and they also have an "advanced" certificate. That may get
you some credibility. They also have chapter meetings (there's a Delaware
Valley chapter and a NY Metro area chapter, depending on where you live in
NJ, where you can schmooze with others in the field. Also an annual meeting
(I think it is in Miami this year).

I would suggest you brush up on ICH guidelines
(http://www.ich.org/ich5.html) and Part 11 (http://www.21cfrpart11.com/)
before getting too far into the process.
