Hey Joanna,

You might want to take a look at something like this:

http://www.nemetschek.net/revisionmaster/index.html

It's a document control application that is produced by a company I used
to work at. It allows for documents to be checked into a system and then
checked out by various users. It keeps track of who checks out the
documents, as well as only allowing one person at a time to edit a document
that's checked out. This way, you not only know who checked out a document
and possibly made changes to it, but you can revert back to the previous
version (or ANY previous version) with little difficulty. This may or may
not help solve your problem.

You are correct! However, the main issue that has caused us to remain with
Word is the ability to track changes. Our company, like so many others, is
in a position where the direct input of SMEs is required...literally. This
means that they will update, review and modify documentation directly in
the documents. As the company TW, I need a way to quickly identify and
edit their work...tracking changes is the obvious answer.

So, the question is, what other programs provide this type of tool, and at
what cost? Documentation management is a big issue. The stability and
single-sourcing capabilities of Frame and other programs are very
attractive, but if using them in this environment means tripling the time
involved, or if the cost of licensing is high, then the ROI is lost.

Comments? Suggestions?

Joanna
