Apparently I've voiced my question poorly. I'm aware that toolbars do
travel with the templates, and not with documents. And I'm aware that the
*styles* you create DO travel with the document.
In my situation it is neither practical or realistic to send the actual
template (.dot) to my remote users to install on their machines - it's
just not gonna happen.
So, to clarify, I have two goals:
1) Create a template (.dot) in which the Bullets and Increase Indent icons
apply MY bulleted styles, without creating custom icons or toolbars. This
template will be "monogamous" - it will live with me and nobody else.<g>
2) Circulate a document (.doc) to my users, based on the styles in the
aforementioned template, which applies MY bulleted styles when they click
their Bullets and Increase Indent icons.
I *know* Word can do this kind of thing. I just don't know if we mere
humans can guide and direct it to do so. <g> I mean, in the template I'm
developing, I created a set of headings that use Outline Numbering. After
much tweaking, they came out fine. Then, for grins, I selected some body
text, and clicked the Numbering icon, and it turned that text into my
numbered style called Heading 1. This was not at all what I wanted (I just
wanted a numbered list), but did prove that those icons *can* interact
custom styles. But how? Maybe it just does it by accident.
I've posted this to the Word list, and even they haven't come up with a
method to do this. So my quest is not looking good...
Anyway, thanks to all for the suggestions!
Keith Cronin
who's about ready to create the James Joyce template, with no formatting,
no punctuation, and certainly NO bulleted lists. Grrrrrr.
