Though I generally agree with Andrew with regard to the STC, I have to
throw in a condition here...

The STC focuses on writing because it's a narrow enough subject. There
are hundreds if not thousands of different groups catering to the
sciences and technologies of the world.

An ambitious tech writer would be involved in both types of "societies".
