TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Not every longterm temp is a permatemp. Permatemping implies that the
employer is manipulating employee status to evade certain obligations.
One of the things I like best about consulting is its project-based
nature. When the project is successfully completed, I am anxious to
move on to another high-quality project. By being selective, I get to
build my experience and portfolio the way I want. (well, that's the
theory anyway).
If your contract includes the phrase "projects as assigned" you just
might be a permatemp.
I guess I'm really talking about the difference between contracting and
consulting. Here's my world view on the subject, YMMV:
- Consultants provide knowledge or skills that the organization does
not have.
- Contractors provide labor according to a plan created by a more
knowledgable person.
So when you get on the job, ask to see the plan, and ask to meet the
more knowledgable person.
If there is no plan, and if YOU are the most knowledgable person, then
you are a consultant. Even if they won't call you one.
