The philosophical writings of STC periodicals or mail
lists notwithstanding, in just about any business, the
definition of "good," both for products and documentation
for same, is that it meets the demands of the paying
customer and whatever regulations govern the business and
can be delivered on or ahead of schedule and at or below
budget. If "1000 pages of crap with a nice title page
and well-fondled fonts" will meet the business needs, then
demonstrate that you can redesign the docs so that the same
results can be achieved with 500 pages of "crap" between
those covers, or that you can improve the process so that
the same 1000 pages of "crap" can be delivered in less time
and with fewer resources. Do this and you will not be
undervalued by your employer, and you can devote your skills
and interests to some side pursuit where people will really
care about the result.

This seems to be a situation where 1000 pages of crap with a nice title page
and well-fondled fonts will meet the business needs just fine.
