Tooting my own horn here...

I make a number of free plugins.  My favorite is TocBreaker - I use it 
most of all of them.  It "remembers" line breaks and page breaks in 
generated files.  Then, if you regenerate your book, you can re-apply 
those breaks.  You can find this and other tools at 
http://www.telecable.es/personales/cud

You might also look at TextStatistic.  This generates word count, unique 
word count, and other statistics for files in a book, plus totals for 
the entire book.  Find it at htpp://www.checkloc.com - checkLoc is a 
tool to manage translation projects, and textStatistic is a gratis piece 
of that suite.  Don't be put off by the German web page...
