Years of status quo w. regard to software = apathy

Software has earned a reputation of being necessary, and has forstered
a community of users who have come to praise it when it actually
finally meets requirements.

If the tool industry as a whole historically and continuously
manufactured hammers that were missing handles, or prongs, or what
have you, people would accept it as normal, buying one hammer from one
manufacturer with the hammer head in tact, another with the prongs in
tact, and use them together and be happy with the solution. Then when
one company comes along and manufactures a complete head with working
shaft and grip, well, they are praised for the wonderful integration
and execution of all the features, when in fact it finally meets spec
and original market expectations.

It's all relative.
