That reminds me of a comparision made by Bob Young, the founder of Red Hat.
People wouldn't buy a car whose hood was welded down, he said, but they'll buy
proprietary software.

Of course, some people might. Last spring, a car manufacturer - Volvo, I think -
actually displayed a prototype that included no hood. The claim was that the
feature was one that women wanted in a car. However, since the feature has yet
to be incorporated into any vehicle, and that's another story.
