I hate Guru because of the costs.

You might also try "getafreelancer dot com." I subscribe to get the
listings and they are quite varied. I do not know if you will find much
work, and I am not connected with the company. They are one among
hundreds of such sites.

Someone I know found a job writing some documentation, signed up and
started communicating with the company that posted the work offer.

After jumping through all the hoops, it turned out that he was actually
communicating with an employment agency. Be careful.
