Salary should be based on one thing and one thing only - how well you do
the job. It is true that moving is the best way to get an increase and
new-comers may well get more. At one place I worked a new writer started
(I was dubious as there were typos in his CV) and I found out he was
getting more than me. When I queried it I was told he wasn't eligible
for the benefits I got and it was sorted (large rise) at the next
review. Whether that would have happened if I hadn't found out I don't
know.

As to the long hours I'm in the 'work to live' camp, not the other way
around. As long as I've enough to live plus a comfort zone I'm happy. As
Bruce said there's no real benefit in the regular long hours - if you
have to do that then it's a badly run company.
