Hi Amanda,

Autonumbering is the most confusing thing about FrameMaker. I think your
problem is that there aren't enough autonumbering tags set up in the
template. You see, the person who made your template didn't plan for
numbering more than three heading levels. Unfortunately, fixing this means
you have to modify all of the styles to add the new tag placeholder. If
you don't, you'll mess up number for tables or figures or *something.*

Here's an excerpt from the FrameMaker FAQ on autonumbering
(http://tinyurl.com/3reuk):

2.2. Autonumbering

2.2.1. [Updated] How do I set up autonumbers for Figures as "Figure
5-1"?

[Author's Note: This subject is covered in the FrameMaker version 5.1
manual.
Please refer to Chapter 4, Formatting Text, section "Formatting Lists,"
beginning
on page 4-36. (page number is from the Adobe version of the
Windows/Macintosh
manual--the Unix manuals may have different page numbers.)]

First, FrameMaker organizes paragraph number into multiple series, each
series
indicated by a capital letter followed by a colon (H:). There is also a
series with no indicator. You can therefore have to total of 27 autonumber
series.

Second, the default behavior is that when a position is ommitted from an
autonumber format, its value is reset to zero. In autonumbering, if you
include the "< >" placeholder in the number, this means "don't display and
don't reset the
number in this position." Note the space between the angle brackets.

Use one autonumber series for both headers and figure numbers. The
positions of
the numbers in the series are as follows:

<level1> <figure> <table> <example> <level2> <level3> <level4> <level5>

The resultant autonumbers are:

Paragraph tag: Head1; format: H:<n+>

Paragraph tag: Figure; format: H:<n>-<n+>< >< >< >< >< >< >

Paragraph tag: Table; format: H:<n>-< ><n+>< >< >< >< >< >

Paragraph tag: Example; format: H:<n>-< >< ><n+>< >< >< >< >

Paragraph tag: Head2; format: H:<n>< >< >< >.<n+>

Paragraph tag: Head3; format: H:<n>< >< >< >.<n>.<n+>

Paragraph tag: Head4; format: H:<n>< >< >< >.<n>.<n>.<n+>

Paragraph tag: Head5; format: H:<n>< >< >< >.<n>.<n>.<n>.<n+>

Good luck,
