Hi Kathrin -
Size and growth rate are hard to say. You might find some information on
the STC (Society for Technical Communication) web site: http://www.stc.org/
Tech writing isn't a standalone industry; its health depends on the state
of other sectors such as IT, engineering, mining and resources,
government, manufacturing, defence, aerospace, and so on. So TW is very
much affected by things like the Sarbanes-Oxley legislation in the US,
Y2K, the Euro (all good or us), resource sector booms (good) and slumps
(bad), the dot.com boom (good) and bust (very bad), and outsourcing (good
and bad, depending).
So over the long term I think the prospects for tech docs companies are
good, but the prospects for a particular company in the short and medium
term depend on where they are and in particular which sectors and how many
sectors their clients embrace.
