I came to the same conclusions that you've listed.
I *did* find an inexpensive tool that let you create
forms-fillable/saveable versions of PDFs, but it produced really ugly
PDFs, so I abandoned the product (fortunately before shelling out to
buy it).

Ah! So I'm *not* the only one who found that to be the case. I never
*did* find a price for it (if you did, I'd love to know what it is).
About the only other web site I've found to as skillfully obscured
desired information in the Crystal Reports web site, on which I was
looking for pricing information for their Java version. (Never did
find that information, either.)
