I could probably name about a half-dozen I know, all of whom left
their regular jobs to start their own businesses. In the fields I have
been working the past 30 years or so, nobody ever rises to "the
big time" from a position as a staff engineer or writer without doing
things like going back to school for an MBA and transitioning into
Project Management or starting their own businesses. Modern
companies almost always recruit their most senior ranks of
management from pools of candidates with backgrounds in
Finance, Business Administration or running their own
businesses. The days of starting out on a drawing board or
typewriter and rising to the executive level went out with drawing
boards and typewriters. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, it just
means that if you want to get to the top, you need to be climbing
the right ladder.
