Hate to bring this up, but is there a possibility that one or more of
these projects is going to be spun off into a for-profit company. That's
happening more and more often in the area where I live (near a major
research university). In that case, one or more of y'all may be asked to
go out with the project.
Also, it may be that the funding sources for the projects come from
different pies, and they may be trying to align their staff with the
funding.

Try looking at it from your management's point of view. They may not just
be ignorant.
